PC PowerCheck is an important diagnostic and test report card for IBM, PC, XT, AT, Amiga, and compatible power supplies. Whether you are a novice or a professional technician, you can use it to detect ALL of the major causes of power supply problems: poor regulations, misadjusted outputs, leaky or noisey components, and blatant component failure. PC PowerCheck has a normal PC edge connector AND contains a 12-pin power supply connector identical to those on XT/AT motherboards. You can plug it into a computer to monitor the supply system while the system is in operation. OR, you can plug the power supply directly into the PC PowerCheck card and test the supply WITHOUT the motherboard. PC PowerCheck contains power resistors to stimulate motherboard load conditions.
PC PowerCheck tests all four of the power supply's output voltages (+5V, -5V, +12V, and -12V) for over/under voltage (positive voltages to within 1/2%), noise, and transients (spikes) conditions to within 3% of origional IBM limit specifications. A LED lights for each error condition detected in each of the 4 voltages. Monitoring circuits are independent of each other so an error condition of one voltage will not cause false error detections of others. The card also monitors the system Reset signal, since that can result from out-of-limit supply voltages.
Errors detectors operate in continuous or trap mode. Continuous shows the error condition in real time, such as driving accessing. Trap keeps the error LED on until you reset it: you don't have to watch the lights constantly. Noise and Reset detectors are continuous; spike always traps. High/low detectors operate in either mode, based on jumper settings. The spike detector traps surges from the supply, normally caused by AC power line spikes. A switch on the back edge of the card resets all traps.
The green summary LEDs along the back edge of hte card indicate the corresponding detectors have found no error.
