Corporate Overview™ Founding and History |
Mr. Hurt was educated at Old Dominion University, and Navy and other schools on computer technology ranging from 4-bit microcomputers to 64-bit mainframes. He had worked in the computer industry for 30 years as a technician, technical writer, instructor, service engineer, manufacturing and test engineer, software engineer, product manager and evangelist. He has served at Control Data Corporation, Hewlett Packard Company, Fluke Corporation, DFE Electronic Data Systems, Orchid Technology, Award Software, Mouse Systems, DEICO Electronics, and Landmark Research International Corporation. He has driven development of POST cards and other diagnostic product for Award and Landmark.
In spring 1993 Mr. Hurt acquired TSN systems, developer of the award winning Remote Rx and InfoSpotter diagnostics. In fall 1993, he acquired source code to Landmark's PC Certify, PC Probe, Service Diagnostics, ROM POST, and Supersoft C compiler. These acquisitions made pcwiz inc the world's leading 3rd party controller of PC diagnostic technology. In 2000 the assets of the company were merged into pcwiz inc.
PRODUCT HISTORY
MARKET, CUSTOMERS, AND MISSION
People will always need an efficient way to determine whether the computer is
functioning properly, and what is wrong if it fails, so that it can be fixed and put
back into service quickly. Down-time is hard to tolerate for people who are
dependent on their computers. It costs money in lost production, so it is worth
money to fix. The faster a technician can find and fix the problem, the more
computers can be fixed in a given time, thereby yielding more revenues to the service
professional and less down-time to the customer. The main people responsible for
finding the computer faults and fixing them are the technicians and systems builders,
but many casual users are being forced by economic necessity to perform as technicians.
Thus, the target market for troubleshooting tools is huge.
pcwiz inc's mission is to develop, build, sell, and be a leading world
supplier of tools to serve that market. The company's broad hardware and software
technology resources, along with its professional management team, philosophy of
loyalty to employees and customers, burgeoning customer base, and growing market
recognition, have poised pcwiz inc to fulfill that mission.

In May of 1991, the company released its first product, PocketPOST, a
diagnostic test card that helps technicians troubleshoot dead PC's. Offered with a 300+ page
manual and unlimited support, it packs more features, functionality, and
value into a small package than any similar product. The company sold more
than 30,000 POST cards by December 1997. PC Clinic was developed from TSN and Landmark
acquisitions, and is
one of the world's most replete and robust PC diagnostic test products. Self-booting,
DOS, and remote testing versions are available for all levels of users, technicians,
and OEM's. Remote test work over serial lines and popular network topologies. The
company also offers power supply testers, floppy drive alignment kits, a broad range
of diagnostic and configuration aid software packages, and source code licenses for
all of its proprietary technology.
As of early 2001 there are approximately 1 billion IBM-compatible personal computers
in existence, and millions of others that are not compatible. Eventually, every one
of them will break down. For the first few years of the PC's existence (starting in
1981), not many computers broke. Now, however, diminished quality from international
PC suppliers has created demand that spawned a huge subculture of the PC industry to
detect and identify computer hardware and configuration faults. Many of the problems
have been reduced by deployment of large integrated circuit chips to take the place of
many smaller computer chips, thereby minimizing failures and simplifying repairs. But
that is not enough. Recent reports indicate severe problems in 30% of mail order
computers.
