1. What is a Problem? A problem is a difference between what reality appears to be and what you want it to be. There are three important factors in a problem:
a. What you want (your goal)
b. What is standing in the way of your goal
c. What you are free to do to change the situation
Often, people have no idea, or only a vague idea about a. above, so they are not satisfied with anything, the current situation always seems horrible, and everything blocks success.
Do you know what you want to Be, Do, or Have? What is that?
2. What is versus what should be. What would things be like if they were ideal? Relating to computers, this means you must know what the system is like when it is working okay. On a detailed level, it is hard to answer this. For example, a cable can be loose or tight, but how loose is "too" loose? Once you know what it SHOULD be like, then examine what it IS like, and compare them. To fix the problem, change circumstances so what is = what should be.
3. What did you do? This is one of the most productive questions to ask. If the system WAS working okay and now it is not, WHAT DID YOU DO to the system since it was okay? Chances are big that you did something that changed the setup of the system and now it will not work.
4. What must you do? Once you have evaluated what you did before and the ideal scene, you can see what is wrong. Unfortunately, there are often many variables that obscure your path to the right thing to do. In order to approach the solution, look at the big picture first and find whatever the variable items have or don't have in common. For example, if the computer does communicate over serial ports properly, you how the serial port relates to other items in the PC. Only the serial port uses the serial controller chip, and only it uses the -12V from the power supply. Nothing else in the computer uses these. The problem could be in the chip or the supply, but it is not in the CPU because if it were, the whole computer would not work. You can usually eliminate confusion over too many variables by analyzing just one at a time in this way.
5. Ask a REAL expert. Most neophytes see a computer as a simple thing to fix because it has only 10 major subassemblies in it. The problem is: newsters often break things in the process of trying to fix other things, and that gives them even more to fix (and break). If you don't know what you are doing, ask a more experienced person for help, and PAY him or her for that help. It is guaranteed that his experience did not come free. If at all in doubt, go to a REAL professional who makes his living fixing computers. Typically, you'll get your money's worth.
